The Canon IXUS 1000HS is one of a growing number of long zoom compacts offering high def video and an ability to perform well in low light. Packing so much functionality into a smallish frame is bound to raise questions about areas of compromise.

It's hard to believe that it's only been ten years since the launch of the first Canon Digital IXUS camera. When I look back at the roughly one thousand cameras I've reviewed since then it seems much, much longer. Fortunately my jaded ennui is assuaged somewhat by the arrival of the camera that Canon has launched in celebration of the tenth anniversary of its benchmark luxury compact series...

Canon has long been king of stylish digital compact, but as more camera vendors produce sexy-looking numbers that can go from evening soiree to beach party without so much as batting an eyelid, the Ixus has often been overlooked.

With its shiny surfaces and angular edges, the 1000 looks almost armour-plated, even though it's mainly made of plastic. It's portable, measuring 101 by 59 by 22mm. The buttons and controls are large but awkwardly angular. The large shutter release is encircled by a zoom lever and thumb-operated scroll wheel, which you'll either love or hate.

The IXUS 1000 HS takes decent pictures, but benefits from some tweaking to eke out its best shots. For a slimline 10x optical zoom camera, it ticks a lot of boxes, providing you can live with its short battery life.
