The Sony W690 certainly isn't going to set the world alight, but it's a smart choice for those after an inexpensive compact camera.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is a decent little 10x zoom camera, but similar models from Nikon, Panasonic, and even Sony itself offer more for your money.

Sony's done a great job of stripping out all of the complexities of photography in the Cyber-shot DSC-W690. It's got a good, sharp lens, and I liked its video performance, but some uneven illumination in my stills results and the shallow viewing angle on the rear LCD dent its appeal.

The W690 packs a good amount of optical zoom into its compact body and is easily small enough to carry around in your pocket. Image quality is also good with good colour reproduction. It's not the quickest camera around, we found it a little slow when it came to switching on, shot-to-shot and when using continuous shooting. If these aren't so important to you, the Sony Cybershot DSC-W690 is a decent compact digital camera.
