Available in smart-looking brushed silver or sophisticated matt black incarnations, the pocket-sized 12.2-effective megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 was much trumpeted on its release in late 2010 for being one of only two Cyber-shots to feature Sony's attention-grabbing 3D Sweep Panorama mode. This merges up to 100 separate images captured in a rapid fire 'sweep' of the camera into one elongated image.
The WX5 delivers plenty of bang for a modest buck, so in that respect any potential purchaser will be sure to find some aspect of its performance to clasp to their bosom, if they can just ignore the slightly more gimmicky aspects. Manage that and the WX5 is one of those cameras with which you can't go far wrong.

The sweep-panorama feature allows the user to capture an elongated image by panning the camera in one continuous arc. The resulting image can be either 2D, as on previous Cyber-shot cameras, or three-dimensional, if shooting in the 3D mode.
The diminutive Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 is a well-built compact camera that will let you take 3D images. Packing plenty of hi-tech features, it offers decent value for money, even if it does feel gimmicky on occasions.

Sony's Cyber-Shot DSC-WX5 is a small and highly capable compact digital camera that packs in plenty of novelty features in addition to a good image sensor. It can be lots of fun to use and its end results are often very pleasing, but its controls feel awful.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 is one of the first 3D digital cameras on the market, and it can work in conjunction with a Sony BRAVIA 3D TV. However, it brings so much more to the table, including excellent image clarity, a wide aperture, very good low-light performance and plenty of novelty features. We're not fans of its buttons and levers, which we think could be much better, but the overall performance and the built-in capabilities out-weigh the negatives.

Seasoned photographers are bound to balk at the lack of manual controls (especially for the $300 asking price), but anyone who wants an easy-to-use pocket camera that goes beyond the competition in fun factor and image quality will find it a great match for their needs. Its 3D-shooting modes are nifty, but they're first-generation implementations, and ultimately they shouldn't drive your buying decision.
