  • "The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G integrates phone and gaming features like no other handset before it. It offers all the essential smartphone features and call quality is respectable."
  • "Some of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G's gaming controls are unresponsive. It lacks an HDMI-out port, photo quality is poor, and data speeds are unimpressive."
Fazit

AT&T's Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G is ideal for gamers, but we'd prefer to see more-accurate controls, a few more features, and a faster data network.

The idea--and long-expected hope--of combining a cell phone with a Sony PlayStation Portable has finally been realized with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. This Android 2.3 smartphone slides open to reveal PlayStation-like buttons, giving gamers more nuanced control than with a touchscreen alone. But how well does this hybrid device live up to the Sony PlayStation brand?

Fazit

Fast performance, immersive gameplay, and long battery life make the Xperia Play a compelling Android phone.

Fazit

It's not very often that you come across a modern smartphone as singularly focused on a particular feature as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Zusammenfassung

It's hard to definitively judge the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play because so much of its appeal lies in what games will be available for it – currently the choice is a bit limited. What we can say though is that there are definite problems with it. The build quality doesn't live up to premium smartphones and its processor is already behind the times. The app purchasing experience is also horrendously disjointed. That said, the game controls themselves are a huge success and even with the modest selection of games currently available they make a huge difference to the enjoyment of gaming on the move. So if that's your priority then it's worth keeping an eye on what games become available over the next few weeks then maybe take the plunge. If, however, you value the general smartphone experience first and the gaming second then you're better off alternatives.

Fazit

It's hard to definitively judge the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play because so much of its appeal lies in what games will be available for it – currently the choice is a bit limited but in a couple of months there could be loads of great titles. What we can say though is that there are definite problems with it. Most notably the build quality doesn't live up to premium smartphones and its processor, while fast enough now, is already behind the times. In these days of app stores, every phone offers a library of games; but for most of us, the dream of a true hybrid of handheld games console and smartphone has never been fully realised (a few loyal Nokia N-Gage owners notwithstanding). The standard touchscreen interface is simply no substitute for proper joypad controls.

  • Great range of games
  • Excellent Xperia Games launcher
  • Smooth, fast Android experience
  • Controller is well-designed
  • Decent battery life
  • Thick and heavy handset
  • Track pads on the controller need tweaking
  • 8GB microSD is small for a gaming phone
  • Flaky Wi-Fi
  • No HDMI port
Zusammenfassung

If you love gaming on your phone already, the Xperia Play's controller will take this to the next level. There's stacks of games and a great smartphone experience, but a few trade offs to consider as well.

Fazit

Built on the solid Android platform and with a huge list of games to download at launch, the Xperia Play will resonate well with its target audience. There is a trade-off, though; the gaming controller makes this phone thick and heavy, and while some will bear this burden easily, others may shy away. We also can't forget the buggy firmware we stumbled across in this review process, though hopefully the Sony Ericsson boffins are already hard at work ironing these issues out.
