Things haven't changed much from the Galaxy S4 but Samsung, as usual, has packed the Galaxy S5 with features. [...] The heart rate monitor is a prime example and while the fingerprint scanner is cool, it's difficult to use. There is some top end hardware here, particularly the screen, but nothing which stands out in a busy and competitive market. A key element is that the design of the Galaxy S5 falls short.

• ✓Good battery life
• ✓Software bloat has been reduced
• ✓Nice usability features

Those who own the S4 don't necessarily need to upgrade. Users in the market for a high-end smartphone should definitely take a good look at the Galaxy S5. The feature set is simply outstanding - even weeks down the line, the user might stumble upon new and useful features. Operation is extremely intuitive and doesn't overwhelm the operator...

If you’re having a tough time deciding between the iPhone 5s and the Galaxy S5, we’ll recommend the S5 for its brilliant camera and amphibious abilities.

• ✓Water-resistant body
• ✓Overall display quality
• ✓Responsiveness/fluidity
• ✓Fast camera with great picture quality in good lighting
• ✓Excellent battery life (and the battery's removable!)

The Galaxy S5 houses the best camera on a Samsung smartphone thus far. It's not perfect, but provides enough resolution for cropping, enlargement and detail preservation. Images look great on the screen and when shared at lower resolutions. If you are expecting best-in-class low-light performance you will want to look elsewhere, as this is still not the Galaxy's strong point. ...

• ✓Spectacular screen.
• ✓Super-fast Wi-Fi and LTE performance.
• ✓Excellent camera.
• ✓Water-resistant.

Aside from a couple of tiny grumbles, then, there's an awful lot to like about the Samsung Galaxy S5. It's a much bigger upgrade than the S4 was last year, and that makes it the best smartphone on the market right now (even if Google's Nexus 5 retains its position atop our A List due to its optimum combination of price and all-round ability)...

[...] It may not be revolutionary, but the Samsung Galaxy S5 is still one of the top Android smartphones money can buy.

There’s no doubt that the specs, build and power of the S5 will make it one of the top phones of 2014. HTC’s contender may change the balance of power here, but the S5 looked extremely strong in our brief hands on. We’ll be putting it through it’s paces and filling in the gaps as soon as, but this is definitely a phone to put top of your upgrade list.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a phone that looks and feels like another top-end S-series phone. It offers loads of new features, and some much-needed improvements to the Samsung interface. However, we're not sure that all that many people will care about all of its new bits.
