The ZenFone 5 won't be to everyone's taste, but the design is excellent and there's some great tech at work here. We're expecting it to be competitively priced, too.

It was a long time coming, but the Asus ZenFone 5 is a great mid-range Android device with a lovely screen, excellent performance and a decent camera that just needs the latest version of Android and a bigger battery.

The Asus Zenfone 5 has all the hallmarks of a cracking mid-range smartphone. The battery life is excellent, the camera puts in a decent showing and the performance isn't far off those of its main budget rivals. The display's lacklustre backlight is unforgivable, though: even at this price, we'd expect better. As a result, Motorola's 4.5in Moto G remains a far more capable all-rounder. Even if you're dead-set on a phone with a larger screen, we'd hold fire – we suspect the forthcoming 5in Moto G2 may be the phone you've been waiting for.

There are a couple of little bits to tweak in the Asus Zenfone 5, but the value on offer here is fantastic. Other 5-inch phones at the price don’t get you screens anywhere near as good as this.

In short, if you're in for a budget Android handset with all round performance, the ZennFone 5 is the handset to get. Yes, it's better than the Moto G, and its success will propel Intel as a serious competitor in the smartphone silicon market.
