The Archos 101 XS offers a unique solution to the keyboard conundrum for tablets, instantly transforming it from a media plaything into a practical work tool for all occasions. The flip-up stand feels a little flimsy for comfort, but the impressive screen, solidly performing processor, decent keyboard and sensible price tag make it one to consider.

A keen price and plenty of power, but the poor integrated keyboard and plasticky build taint the experience.

The 101 XS is without a doubt the best tablet Archos has ever come up with, as well as one of the best tablets that are out right now. The battery life, hybrid functionality and part-"wow", part-"blah" display prevent it from getting our full five-star rating, but it's an enjoyable tablet that should let few people down.

While the keyboard dock and £300 price tag make it a cheaper alternative to the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, it's sadly not cheap enough to make the poor screen, flimsy, awkward keyboard dock and other assorted issues acceptable. The 101 XS makes up some ground with its decent performance, but not enough for me to recommend it as a worthwhile purchase.

We know how important desirability is to consumers. Although the Archos 101 XS is smart, is it going to be desirable enough to for the £299 asking price? For a 10-inch tablet, the price is pretty good, but it’s only £30 cheaper than an iPad 2 and those sell like hot cakes. There's no doubt that the 101 XS is Archos' best tablet to date and it's a decent attempt to undercut rivals, notably Asus Transformer Pad 300. It's £100 cheaper and the keyboard dock is far less fiddly. However, the dock was reliable only when on a desk in our tests, and other build quality issues surrounding the buttons and screen mean we can't recommend the 101 XS unequivocal
