While the Lumia 800 remains the king of Windows Phones, its little brother is a good performer. There’s stiff competition ahead and cheaper Android phones but the Lumia 710 is ideal for first time Windows users.

Nokia's Lumia 710 doesn't offer anything remarkable, but a slick user experience at a very competitive price makes it great value for money. At under $400, the Lumia 710 is a much better option than most lower-end Android phones.

• ✓Gute Sprachqualität
• ✓Gute Messwerte
• ✓Sehr gute Navigation

Gutes Windows- Handy im Plastik-Look mit schwachem Akku.

• ✓Good finishing
• ✓Fast
• ✓Nokia Drive
• ✓Good for photos and video

• ✓Guter Prozessor, flotte Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit
• ✓Navi-Software vorinstalliert

• ✓Agile Performance
• ✓Inexpensive but still feature-rich

The Nokia Lumia 710 gives you almost everything that Lumia 800 users are paying for apart from the sexy polycarbonate build. If you're willing to forget about this, you're in for a treat – it's very easy to get attached to the Windows Phone People hub and the Lumia 710's 3.7in screen and 5MP camera – while far from perfect – offer great value at the sub-£250 price. And we even found a few knocking around for a bargainous £170 too.

• ✓Sharp 3.7in screen, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS, Nokia Music, Nokia Drive, Microsoft Office

• ✓Speedy performance
• ✓Lightweight, sturdy build
• ✓Affordable price tag

• ✓Removable battery
• ✓Intuitive user interface
• ✓Nokia apps
• ✓Integration with Xbox Live
• ✓Cloud-based backup

Poor battery life undermines an otherwise decent Windows Phone handset

• ✓Extremely affordable with contract
• ✓Windows Phone 7.5 is a great OS
• ✓Nokia Drive turn-by-turn navigation is free
• ✓Solid battery life

• ✓Decent screen
• ✓Slick Windows Phone OS
• ✓Well built

The Lumia 710 isn't as nice as the 800 but then we know that it isn't supposed to be. This is about making Windows Phone 7 affordable, and on that front the 710 is perfectly pitched. With the Lumia 800 around the £35 price point on contract, we suspect that you'll be able to get the Lumia 710 for around £15 - £20 a month with the handset "free". That's a good price in anyone's books.

• ✓Günstiger Preis
• ✓flüssige Bedienung dank WP 7

• ✓Gute Performance
• ✓Modernes Betriebssystem
• ✓Gratis-Navigation
• ✓Sehr gute Akustik

... We think that this phone's attractive price tag will help compel mainstream buyers into Windows Phone 7, despite the fact that it's bolstered by fewer apps. The Lumia 710 is budget-friendly, but it doesn't sacrifice build quality in any way. When you hold the phone, nothing feels loose or imprecise. We like that. Better still, the 710's screen has a gorgeous color palette, and we see that its blue hues are particularly striking. Watching video on it is truly a pleasure.

T-Mobile scored the rights to this phone in the U.S., and you have to pay $350 to buy it without a contract. If you're willing to enter a two-year relationship with the carrier, you can get the Lumia 710 for as little as $50, qualifying it as a fairly entry-level smartphone. So, although we've been comparing the Lumia to Apple's iPhone 4S, that's only because the iPhone will serve as a reference in our lab for smartphone testing moving forward...

The Nokia Lumia 710 might not be the most powerful phone, but its reliable performance, array of business and entertainment features and crisp display makes it a top choice for first time smartphone owners and those on a tight budget.

• ✓Agile performance
• ✓Inexpensive but still feature-rich

• ✓Fast processor
• ✓Free turn-by-turn navigation
• ✓Exclusive apps promised in future

• ✓"Cheap. Comfortable size, shape and materials. Comes with enough built-in apps and services (ESPN, Netflix, The Weather Channel, My Account) to be convenient, but not overburdened. Comes in black or white."

It's not the Nokia / Microsoft lovechild we've all been patiently awaiting here in the states. No, it's the other Lumia -- the low-end one. And it's headed for a berth on T-Mobile's airwaves next week, on January 11th. Rather than go big (or go home), Espoo's chosen to wade gently into the shallow waters of the US smartphone market, loading this budget Mango device with respectable mid-range specs and an irresistible price. ...
