Mit 800 Euro ist das Acer Aspire S3 sozusagen der Preisbrecher unter den Ultrabooks, die in Einstiegskonfigurationen in vielen Fällen knapp 1.000 und damit 200 Euro mehr kosten. Zweifelsohne merkt man dem Testgerät diese Differenz an, nicht zuletzt das nicht komplett aus Aluminium bestehende Gehäuse oder das schlechte Display sprechen eine deutliche Sprache...

Auch dieses S3 schafft ein knapp „gutes“ Testergebnis. Vor allem die rasante SSD und der knackige i7-Prozessor haben zusammen mit der Verarbeitung ihren Anteil daran. Leider vergällen uns einige Laster wie das spiegelnde Dunkel-Display etwas die Testfreude. ..

Noch ist es unklar, was die Besonderheit von „Ultrabooks“ sein soll – das hier gebotene kennen wir bereits seit Jahren von der MacBook Air-Serie. Dennoch ist es sehr spannend, wie das Konzept im Windows-Lager ankommt. Das Acer Aspire S3 ist im Hinblick darauf ein insgesamt ordentlicher, aber unspektakulärer Vorbote.

On its own, the Acer Aspire S3 is a slim, good-looking bit of kit with powerful components under the hood. Sadly, it's beaten to the punch by the competition who offer better specs for the same money.

The Acer Aspire S3 is the closest you can get to the look and feel of a MacBook Air for less than $1,000, but it requires a few compromises.

The S3’s considerable processing grunt, supercharged wake times and 240GB solid-state drive are impressive specs to find in a laptop under two centimetres thin and weighing just 1.3kg. It runs Windows natively and has a full HDMI port. It can sleep for nearly two months and be ready to pounce into Windows in under six seconds. Yes, it costs a lot, but the Acer Aspire S3, like a slightly flawed diamond, is still worth waving your wallet towards. Just don't expect perfection.

The first ultrabook is a glimpse of what's yet to come. As it stands, though — and we thought we'd never say this about an Apple product — you get more for less money with the MacBook Air.
