The Pearl 3G does exactly what it promises, offering all the features of a top-of-the-line BlackBerry in a small, candybar case. But BlackBerry devices are all about email and messaging, so we missed the full QWERTY keyboard of the Pearl 3G's siblings.

Every time we used the Pearl we wished it was the Bold, and considering the way both phones are priced in Australia there's no reason not to buy a Bold instead.

If the BlackBerry Pearl 3G has a problem it's that the BlackBerry Bold 9700 came out months before it. Of its own merits, the Pearl is an excellent phone, its fast, stable, capable of running your life and filling in the dull moments with games, music and videos. But we don't love the form factor, the keypad feels cramped and every time we look at the screen we wish it was bigger. The BlackBerry OS is a well-designed smartphone platform, but it really wasn't designed with screens of this size in mind. ...

We were impressed that RIM's BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9100 offers the same capabilities and functions found on more expensive BlackBerry smartphones. The trade off comes in the form of a smaller, pocketable form factor, resulting in a cramped keyboard, small display and flimsy build quality.

As a T9 candybar phone, on a cheap contract, we'd rate the Pearl 3G highly. As a fully-fledged smartphone there are obvious shortcomings, so to a certain extent you'll be choosing size over the complete experience
