Testberichte
- Great design
- life-proofing
- image quality can be excellent
- responsive LCD
- Soft images
- auto white balance system
- very expensive
- low-resolution LCD screen
Compacts designed to be water, freeze and shockproof often trade in a little style to meet these specifications, but the Sony TX-5 is life-proof and does well not to compromise its aesthetics qualities.
Perhaps one of the best looking everything-proof compacts on the market and with sometimes-excellent image quality, but at almost £300 it's priced far higher than it should be.
- Gute Bildqualität bei Tageslichtaufnahmen
- Stoßfest und wasserdicht
- Mäßige Bildqualität bei Blitzaufnahmen
- Träger Touchscreen
Waterproof, shockproof compact cameras have become very popular over the past couple of years, with several of the main manufacturers fielding “ruggedised” models in their ranges. I took a look at a few of the more popular waterproof compacts last year, and there are a few other recent models that can be added to the list, such as the Casio EX-G1 and the Pentax W90 which I'm hoping to review soon...
There's a slight premium to be paid here, but as the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 offers a staggering combo of image quality, good looks and rugged credentials, we think it's worth forking out the extra for. A point and shoot camera through and through, it's simple to use and can handle some rough treatment without falling to bits.
Waterproof cameras aren’t just for scuba and skiing excursions. Because these cameras tend to be shockproof – in the TX5’s case for drops of up to 1.5 metres – they can be thought of as klutz-proof, too...
A capable compact snapper that’s protected from water, dust, knocks and cold, and is ideal for the adventurous or accident-prone
- "Bestes Weitwinkel
- klasse Features
- edles Design"
- Super-wide-angle lens
- 10fps burst mode
- Great 'intelligent sweep panorama' mode
- Shockproof, freezeproof and waterproof
- 720p movie mode
- Not immediately obvious how the interface works
- Arguably slightly awkward to handle
The TX5 lets you have your cake and eat it. Despite its ruggedised construction, it's just as slim, dainty and elegant as any other Sony ultra-compact camera. It comes in five different colours (silver, black, red, pink and green), and has a supremely fuss-free exterior, with nothing on the front except brushed steel, and nothing on the back except a big, 75mm (3-inch) LCD touchscreen.
There are so many compact cameras on the market now that new models really have to do something special to stand out. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 rises to the challenge, offering a plethora of unique selling points. By pursuing processing speed rather than megapixels, Sony's opening up whole new ways of taking pictures.
- Responsive touchscreen
- start-up time is minimal
- Took unimpressive photos during our tests
- awkward design
Sony has unveiled its first tough camera in Australia: the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5. You'd have to look carefully to know it's a tough one: Sony has ditched the rugged-looking exterior that kinds of cameras usually have. Instead, the Cyber-shot TX5 is an ultra-compact digital camera with a minimalist look.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 is something of a novelty: a ruggedised camera with an ultra-compact design. It's not quite as tough as some competing digital cameras, and we weren't overly impressed by its image quality.
- Acceptable pictures up to ISO 1,600
- useful functions such as Sweep Panorama and Handheld Twilight
- stylish look
- quick performance
- The touchscreen is the most fragile aspect of this camera. Once cracked, you won't be able to access the menus
The rugged point-and-shoot segment was predominantly Olympus' game two years ago. But since last year, more manufacturers have dished out their own tough shooters. Notably, it was Panasonic which proved to be the most aggressive--the Lumix DMC-FT2 had hardy specifications closest to Olympus' flagship Mju Tough-8010. While Canon and Fujifilm did release almost similar offerings, they just weren't as robust as the Panasonic or Olympus units.
The TX5 is a rugged camera that offers fast performance and good pictures, but the touchscreen is perhaps the most vulnerable aspect of this shooter.
Are you looking for a stylish camera or a rugged camera? Usually you have to pick one trait or the other, but the 10-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 offers both.
Although the touchscreen is sometimes frustrating, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 is a decent entry into the rugged-camera market that looks stylish enough for everyday use. We would have appreciated at least one more hardware button for quickly cycling through shooting styles, because the last thing we want to do when we're scuba diving is to fool with confusing touchscreen menus. ...
- Rugged construction with slick looks
- Good performance in low light
- Large touchscreen works underwater
- Touchscreen can be unresponsive
- Menus are a bit confusing
Are you looking for a stylish camera or a rugged camera? Usually you have to pick one trait or the other, but the 10-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 offers both. The DSC-TX5 looks just like many of the other slim, fashionable models in the Cyber-shot TX series, but this camera is built to withstand shocks, water, freezing, heat, and dust. In fact, I had to look twice to make sure I was holding the right camera before I dunked it into the pool. The DSC-TX5 comes in green, pink, red, black, and silver, and is priced at $330. ...

I would have appreciated at least one more hardware button for quickly cycling through shooting styles, because the last thing you want to do when scuba diving is to fool around with confusing touchscreen menus. That said, it's certainly the most day-to-day-friendly rugged camera we've seen, and its features and its low-light shots are impressive.

Sony's tough but fashionable DSC-TX5 offers excellent low-light shooting, but its touchscreen and menus are drawbacks.

- Robust enough to allow pictures that would prove impossible for standard cameras
- more compact and moreover more stylish dimensions than we're used to from this class of cameras
- plus unique creative features and low light image quality that betters initial expectations
- The premium price
- lens positioning means that it's easy for fingertips to stray into your frames
On first glance the 10.2 effective megapixel resolution DSC-TX5 seems a modest addition to Sony's Cyber-shot series. Like the other credit-card sized models in the same range it resembles a cigarette case or makeup compact with its slender depth and shiny-mirrored metal fascia. ...
A "tough" digital camera that doesn't look like it, this responsive touch screen model has enough interesting features to stop more advanced users getting bored, whilst being simple enough for beginners to operate. The only stumbling block is the high price, though a quick online search will shave off the pounds
