The HX9V is an outstanding travel compact, albeit one with a somewhat premium price tag. It’s easy to use, feels great in the hand and delivers fantastic image quality – especially when used in Sony’s proprietary Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto shooting modes. The omission of Aperture-priority and Shutter-priority shooting modes along with the ability to record lossless Raw files is all a bit of a let-down given the price, but otherwise there is very little to moan about and plenty to like. Sony’s Sweep Panorama technology is the best there is for in-camera ultra wideangle imaging, while the HX9V’s HD movie capabilities are also class leading. However, there’s still no getting away from that £300 price tag. It’s undoubtedly a lot of money for a compact camera, so be sure to shop around before parting with any money.
- 16X zoom lens with 24mm wide angle
- Superb 1080p, 60-fps video quality
- In-camera GPS and compass
- Great modes for 3D, panorama, and low-light shots
- Oversaturated colors in Auto mode
- Limited GPS features
- Pop-up flash is too powerful
The 16X-optical-zoom Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is loaded with fun extras, including 3D shooting, excellent video quality, in-camera GPS, and groundbreaking scene modes.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V holds a lot of appeal for photographers who won't mind a camera that does things differently from the norm. If you're willing to trade away RAW shooting, aperture-priority mode, and shutter-priority mode for a range of innovative in-camera modes that cover everything from low-light shooting to 3D panoramic images, the HX9V is a top-notch option...
- gigantische Ausstattung
- exzellente Foto- und Videoqualität
- schnell
- Brilliant LCD screen
- excellent build quality
- very good low-light image quality
- manual exposure control
- beautifully colored images
- very good video quality
- Video recording takes a few seconds to initialize
- can blow highlights when using auto modes, in-camera battery charging is a bit of a pain
- no RAW capture
Sony's previous attempts at travel zoom cameras have been decent, serviceable affairs with plenty of features to keep up with the class-leading models like Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ20. With the HX9V, things are set to change.
The HX9V makes an ideal travel companion for those who enjoy life on the road, with a great feature set, including a 16x optical zoom lens.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a camera that offers more features than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V ($350 as of June 1, 2011). Two years ago, its 16X-optical-zoom lens would have been enough to turn heads. In today's world of ever-shrinking cameras with ever-expanding zoom ranges, that zoom lens is simply one of this camera's many distinguishing factors.
The 16X-optical-zoom Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is loaded with fun extras, including 3D shooting, excellent video quality, in-camera GPS, and groundbreaking scene modes.

- "The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is overflowing with shooting features, and has excellent photo and video quality and solid shooting performance."
- "The HX9V might actually be too much camera for some users and there are a couple of minor design issues."
Feature junkies in search of a compact megazoom should get the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V.
- starker Zoom
- sehr guter Full HD-Modus
- ansprechendes Design
- solide Verarbeitung
- schwacher 3D-Modus
- relativ teuer
- Lengthy, 16x optical zoom
- Compact design
- Potentially gimmicky 3D effects
- Expensive
Anyone familiar with compact superzooms like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ8 or TZ10 will feel right at home with the HX9V. This chunky little snapper is light enough to carry around all day, weighing a modest 215g.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V looks set to deliver long-zooming thrills in a compact package. We just hope the image quality is good enough to justify its high price.
