The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is U.S. Cellular's only 4G LTE tablet, but we have a better idea.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 feels good in the hands. In its bid to outdo Apple, the Tab’s been craftily designed to be even lighter and thinner than iPad 2 – but by spookily narrow margins: Samsung knows the importance of waving superlative specs under the eyes of undiscriminating consumers...

  • "Its blazingly fast 4G LTE speeds match and in some cases surpass that of Wi-Fi networks. As thin as the iPad 2 and even lighter, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in any form is still the sexiest Honeycomb tablet we've seen."
  • "The placement of the volume rocker and power button on the side leads to lots of accidental button presses. Also, the lack of ports will be a problem for some and the plastic back leaves it feeling less solid than the iPad 2. Preliminary battery life using 4G is disappointing."
Fazit

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE offers blazingly fast "always connected" 4G speeds for the price of a two-year commitment and a sleek, sexy, and light design, which gets as close to the iPad 2 as any Android tablet before it.

Zusammenfassung

So here it is, in our lab at last: Samsung's long-awaited riposte to the Apple iPad has finally made it. It officially went on sale at the start of August, but getting hold of a Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been a tricky business ever since. Given all of the legal wranglings over patents between Apple and Samsung, saying that the Tab has had a bit of a rough start is something of an understatement...

Fazit

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been hotly anticipated and it looks like it's been worth the wait. It's fast, thinner and lighter than any other tablet we've ever seen and the new PLS display technology seems promising. But the fact you can't add extra memory or use anything but the proprietary connector count against it.

The Samsung 10 inch tablet was debuted to public for the first time at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona at the beginning of the year. Samsung was neither present at the following CeBIT 2011 in Hanover nor was there a sample in view on the simultaneous road show, but the mobile communication provider, Vodafone, had a device under its counter. Talking about Vodafone: The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v is exclusively distributed by Vodafone with hardware branding on the device's flipside in Germany until now. However, the device doesn't have a SIM lock. ...

Fazit

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v leaves a basically positive impression that is only marred by a few drawbacks. Bonus points are the modern case, the haptically pleasant plastic, the wireless and sensor equipment and the Nvidia Tegra 2 (250) System-on-a-Chip solution's performance. This is opposed by the virtually non-existent connectivity, the scope of delivery on an economical level and the 10.1 inch screen's high-gloss surface. ...

Zusammenfassung

It's hard enough to look at any 10in Android tablet without instantly comparing it to Apple's iPad 2, but it's virtually impossible not to do so with Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1. Aside from the widescreen form factor, every part of this sleek Android Honeycomb 3.1 tablet's look is geared to go head-to-head with Apple's iOS big boy. It ensures one thing though - this is the best-looking Android tablet yet.

Fazit

Slimmer and lighter than an iPad 2, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 proves that Android tablets don't have to be iOS's ugly sisters. It tops off a svelte design with a brilliant screen, decent battery, solid video support and a comfortable-to-hold back. Aside from limited connectivity, its faults are wider Android problems rather than things to level at Samsung and its design team.

  • not many apps available for Honeycomb yet
Zusammenfassung

ith Google's Honeycomb in place, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v is an outstanding device for personal media and Web consumption. There isn't much Samsung can do about the sub-par app support for Android tablets so far (but this is bound to improve), though we do think excluding HDMI or DLNA from the out-of-the-box experience is missing a trick, to say the least.

Fazit

We loved using the Galaxy Tab 10.1v. It's lightweight and extremely responsive, but it's hard to overlook the features it is missing.

On top of this, the lack of micro SD card support and a user-replaceable battery isn't going to win favour from those who refuse to buy an iPad for the same reasons. ...
