The Olympus XZ-1 has one of the fastest zoom lenses in its class, the iZuiko f1.8-2.5 6.0-24mm (28-112mm equivalent angle of view in 35mm cameras.) Rather than succumb to the continuing Megapixel race, the light-reception area of each pixel of the 1/1.63-inch, 10 Megapixel CCD has been doubled. ...

Kein kontinuierlicher Autofokus. Helligkeitsverteilung sehr gut. Verzeichnung sehr gering. Lange Kaltstartzeit. Dauerbelichtung möglich. Bildbearbeitung mitgeliefert.

Gesamtbewertung: 85,67%

Fazit

  • Unique scene modes and art filters
  • F1.8 aperture at wide-angle end
  • F2.5 at telephoto
  • Control ring provides quick manual adjustments
  • Lacks a hand grip
  • Underexposed images in iAuto mode
  • Autofocus struggles in low-light and macro modes
  • A lot of menu-diving required
Zusammenfassung

When you compare the Olympus XZ-1's features with those of the vast majority of point-and-shoot cameras, it absolutely blows them out of the water. We're talking about things like an F1.8 lens, full manual controls and manual focus, raw shooting, a click-control ring around its lens to adjust in-camera settings quickly, exposure- and white-balance bracketing modes, a built-in neutral density filter, a 10-megapixel CCD sensor that's bigger than most, a hot shoe for various accessories, and a 3-inch OLED screen. Great things, all of those. ...

Fazit

The XZ-1 offers a nice mix of creative filters, tutorial modes, and advanced settings, but it has an imposing price tag, a sometimes imposing menu system, and a very imposing field of competitors. Pocketable powerhouses such as the Canon PowerShot S95 might be a better fit for casual users, while more-advanced cameras such as the Nikon Coolpix P7000 and Canon PowerShot G12 offer better overall performance out of the box. The XZ-1 also trails the premium point-and-shoot pack in terms of video quality; you're better off with the Panasonic Lumix LX5 or the PowerShot G12 if shooting video is high on your to-do list. ...

The Olympus XZ-1 marks a welcome return for Olympus to the advanced creative compact category, a sector in which it was once a leader, but in recent years had abandoned for the mass volume, point-and-shoot market.

With the ranks of high performance compact cameras swelling by the week, Olympus has come late to the party with its own 10 megapixel, 4x optical zoom XZ-1. • F1.8 to F2.5 zoom lens is great for shooting in low-light environment
  • good picture quality, especially for RAW photos
  • decent performance
  • Menu interface can be confusing for new users
  • cannot adjust size of focusing box
Zusammenfassung

The advanced compact market has been dominated by Panasonic since it launched the LX3 in 2008, and continued its reign with the LX5 that was announced last year. Other brands such as Canon and Nikon tried to topple the LX shooters from its top spot with their own high-end shooters such as the PowerShot S95 and Coolpix P7000, respectively, but still the Lumix held its spot.

Fazit

We would have given the XZ-1 an Editors' Choice award if not for the unappealing menu interface and the fixed size of the focusing box. But if these are not dealbreakers for you, this Olympus possibly is one of the best advanced compact you can get on the market now.

Most compact cameras are pretty hopeless at low-light shooting, forcing you to use a flash in murkier conditions.
