Olympus's tough camera heritage has clearly paid off with the TG-1. The camera is clearly the result of many a generation of tweaks and enhancements. The body feel solid and assuring in build, yet features enough clever design elements to still handle well in difficult conditions. Image quality issues are the only real criticisms of the TG-1, but on the whole it's one of the best tough cameras on the market.

The TG-1 is packed with Olympus' finest technology, including an OLED screen, an ultra-tough build, a GPS, a fast lens, etc. Unfortunately, lens quality still isn't on par with certain competitors (Panasonic's FT4 in particular). You're therefore best off sticking to 8" x 10" (20 x 27 cm) pics and you might as well forget about cropping. But, so long as you stay at that kind of size, picture quality will look very good.

The TG-1 may succeed in the tough stakes but, as per so many previous Olympus Tough cameras, it’s rather pedestrian by design and in use. The f/2.0-4.9 lens might sound great at the wide-angle setting, but no aperture or manual control seriously stunts its use. Performance isn’t great and image quality is nothing special. Despite our high expectations, this is pricey as a standalone camera; one for hardcore specialist use only.
