12 MP, 5-fach-Zoom, 24–120 mm Brennweite äquivalent zu Kleinbild. Handliche Kompaktkamera mit allen wichtigen manuellen Möglichkeiten. Kein Sucher. GPS, HDR, High-Speed-Videos.

The Canon Powershot S100 is an excellent digital camera. If you are looking for a camera to carry everywhere you go with plenty of features then this could be the camera for you.

Fazit

The Canon S100 is the company’s brand new high end pocket camera, replacing the much-admired S95. In fact, the two look so alike that you might assume Canon have stuffed in a few new features (like GPS) and left it at that. But you’d be so, so wrong: the S100 comes with a triple whammy of major changes: new lens, new sensor and new DIGIC 5 processor.

Fazit

Canon did an excellent job updating its S-series line with the S100, bringing additional features, improved high-ISO/low-noise performance, and very good image quality.

The S100 provides better low-light performance than its predecessor and should appeal to advanced users with its F2 aperture, wider lens and SLR-like control ring. However, some judder in full-HD video and limited GPS functionality prevent us from making a full recommendation

Excellent pictures, small size, great design, GPS technology and 1080p HD movie are all plus points. Occasional close-focusing issues, a high price and no hotshoe are the only criticisms that we do have. Canon's S100 looks to take high-end compacts to the next level with its larger 1/1.7in sensor and 24-120mm zoom. Can the S95's sucessor bring compact perfection? The What Digital Camera Canon PowerShot S100 review...

Fazit

Canon's PowerShot S100 may not look all too different from its S95 predecessor, but plenty has changed for the better. The latest model is small yet powerful: its body feels robust and the wide-angle 24-120mm f/2.0-5.9 lens is impressive from a camera of such a size...

  • Settings control rings can be customised

  • Manual mode and RAW mode
  • 1080p HD video with stereo sound and optical zoom
  • Edges of the frame aren't as sharp at wide-angle settings
  • Heavy distortion in RAW shots at wide-angle settings
  • Aperture soon drops as you zoom (f/2 for wide-angle, f/5.9 for telephoto)
  • Limited battery life (200 photos or less with GPS active)
Zusammenfassung

Updating a well-liked and successful camera is always a delicate affair. So seeing as Canon's S95 was a very nice expert compact indeed, it comes as no surprise to see that the PowerShot S100 doesn't stray too far from the original concept...

Fazit

The Canon PowerShot S100 is a camera that's great to use, with plenty of advanced functions and handling that's sometimes worthy of an SLR. What's more, it takes high-quality pictures and videos. It's just a shame that the lens isn't a little more consistent but, most of all, it's the disappointing battery life that really cost this camera its fifth star!
