Fazit

Battery life is disappointing, especially as the XPS 15 is intended as a lightweight Ultrabook, although as a desktop replacement system it ticks more of the right boxes. It provides outstanding display quality and high-end performance at a competitive price, while still being slim and light enough to slip into a bag for the occasional business trip or weekend away.

  • "The new Dell XPS 15 has an appealing minimalist design, solid construction, and powerful components."
  • "There are only a handful of preconfigured builds available, and the more powerful options get very expensive. It's also too heavy for regular commuting."
Fazit

You can get similar components to our Core i7 Dell XPS 15 configuration for less, but the rock-solid design makes this feel like a premium machine.

With the relaunch of their XPS branding, Dell has released quite a few interesting laptops during the past three quarters. Their latest addition to the line is the thin XPS 15z, and if you haven’t read or heard about it yet let’s be clear: it takes more than a few design cues from Apple’s MacBook Pro 15. We could also look at the HP Envy line and say that Dell borrows a few ideas there as well—though admittedly, "let's make a thin laptop with an aluminum exterior" isn't exactly a revolution in industrial design concepts. The result is still something different than what Apple and HP offer, but if imitation is a form of flattery, Apple in particular should be feeling quite pleased right now. When we get to the details, however, the outward similarities start to disappear.

Fazit

You can call the XPS 15z whatever you want. Is it a cheap knockoff of the MacBook Pro 15? Yes, but that’s just it: it’s a lot less expensive for a similar experience. The MacBook Pro 15 still wins out on build quality, and it packs a quad-core CPU. For the price, however, the XPS 15z is still a very nice laptop—and I know quite a few people that have already purchased the 15z for their own use. If good artists copy and great artists steal, what do you call an “artist” that is only moderately successful at copying but throws in enough unique twists to create an interesting work of art? Because that’s what Dell has done with the 15z. There are a few areas of concern, like the rather thin and flexible aluminum casing and the relatively high temperatures under load. The 1080p LCD fails to live up to the standard established by the XPS 15, but it’s still better than most consumer laptop LCDs. Sound quality and the keyboard layout are also a step back from the XPS 15 in my opinion, but they’re still adequate. Balanced against the concerns we have a much sleeker form factor and better battery life.

If you glanced quickly at the Dell XPS 15z, you'd be forgiven for thinking you had seen a MacBook Pro. The XPS 15z has a very similar aluminium shell that curves smoothly at the edges. Of course, there is a Dell logo on the top of this guy, rather than a picture of half-eaten fruit.

  • Roomy, 15.6-inch display
  • Great multimedia and pretty good gaming
  • Mediocre computing performance and battery life
  • Heavy and chunky, with an oversize brick
Zusammenfassung

For multimedia buffs, the XPS 15 (model L502X) is a generally solid addition to Dell's line of consumer laptops with a little added oomph in performance. Even the basic, most inexpensive model--our review unit costs $799--has discrete Nvidia GeForce 525M graphics with 1GB of memory, a 15.6-inch widescreen LED-backlit display, and JBL-designed speakers, all of which make watching videos and listening to music quite delightful; it also produced better-than-average scores on our gaming tests, compared with other laptops at this cost level.

Fazit

The entry-level Dell XPS 15 (L502X) will delight multimedia buffs, but it's too big and heavy for frequent travelers.

Zusammenfassung

The obvious comparison for Dell's new XPS 15z (the first in a line of z-series XPS systems) isn't another Windows-based PC, it's a 15-inch MacBook Pro. In fact, the overall look and feel of the system are close enough to those of Apple's iconic laptop that you might confuse the two at a glance. The new XPS 15z doesn't quite match the MacBook Pro's level of polish and sophistication, but it costs substantially less.

Fazit

If every Dell laptop were this good in both build and design, the company's reputation among consumers would be completely restored.

Zusammenfassung

If you like ultra-slim, aluminium laptops and are looking for something with a little more screen real estate than your average ultraportable, Dell's new XPS 15z might well be the one for you. With highlights like a anodised aluminium outer unibody shell, magnesium palm rests, optional Full HD screen and Core i7 under the hood, this is one impressive candidate – yet it's still less than an inch thick!

Fazit

The Dell XPS 15z is the MacBook Pro of the Windows world, with a streamlined aluminium and magnesium chassis, good 1,920 x 1,080 screen, backlit chiclet keyboard and plenty of power under the hood despite being less than an inch thick. Unfortunately it gets rather audible under load, its keyboard and speakers aren't the best, and the absence of a Blu-ray drive holds it back from being an all-round entertainment centre, but if you're happy with a DVD rewriter and are after a chic yet competent machine, this is definitely one to consider.

We were quite impressed with Dell's 17.3in refresh of its high-end consumer XPS line, the logically-named Dell XPS 17. Now it's time to check out its little brother, the 15.6in XPS 15. Sporting an identical design, specifications take a step back – but then so does the price, and as ever with Dell, this XPS is quite customisable. In addition to its rather fetching design, it also retains the extensive connectivity and 2.1 JBL speaker system that impressed with its larger sibling. With all this goodness presented in a more portable package, is this the ideal 'everyman' laptop?

Dell's XPS 15 is an impressive 15.6in laptop, offering good build quality, class-leading connectivity, decent video and audio, and plenty of power for the average user. Fazit

With plenty of solid mainstream notebooks available for under $700, a machine with a nearly $900 starting price needs to bring something special to the table. Fortunately, Dell's XPS 15 (starting at $849; $864 as configured) offers a lot more than just a Core i5 processor and 1GB Nvidia graphics card. Fazit

One of the best sounding notebooks ever is also one of the fastest you can buy for the money.
