Asus G74SX-TZ024V
Testberichte
- High level performance
- More RAM than you can poke a stick at
- 3GB on a video card? Is that even necessary
- Easy access panel for upgrading
- Terrible Sentelic touch pad makes a return
- Bad quality speakers considering the size of the laptop
- Voluminous amounts of crapware
The G74SX is a good laptop marred by painful concessions — namely the awful trackpad, cheap speakers and droves of crapware. All of these things can be overcome by the user spending more time and money, but we sure wish this wasn't the case.
Marking the fourth time we’ve taken ASUS’ G7 gaming series for a spin, the G74SX actually changes up the formula from the last-iteration G73Sw in some meaningful ways. Superficially, the two notebooks look the same, but when you crack open the spec sheet and take a closer look you’ll find some nice updates. It’s pretty easy to list what exactly has changed: the keyboard layout is better—nearly perfect in my opinion—and ASUS has finally decided to ship a high-end notebook with an SSD + HDD storage combination. ASUS also bumps the GPU up to the GTX 560M from the GTX 460M, and memory in our test unit checks in at a hefty 16GB (4x4GB).
I must admit that the G73SW left me feeling a little underwhelmed; it was nearly the same as the G73JW, only with a Sandy Bridge CPU. Yes, Sandy Bridge is a noteworthy upgrade from Clarksfield, but we wanted more. The G74SX is the answer, bringing some minor and some not-so-minor updates to the G7 series. The external design is similar to the previous generation, but there are some clear changes in materials and hints that the internal layout isn’t the same. Perhaps the biggest change, however, is in the keyboard. I’m something of a keyboard snob when it comes to laptops and notebooks. I write (type) for a living, and I type fast enough that differences between my regular desktop keyboard and typical laptop keyboard become immediately apparent. Having discovered the improved layout on the G74SX, I decided to try something: I’d write nearly this entire review on the keyboard to see how I felt after a lengthier experience. The verdict? While I still prefer my MS Natural keyboard, for a notebook the ASUS G74SX does quite well. The size of the keys and their layout makes it easy to switch between a desktop keyboard and the notebook, key travel is good, and there’s keyboard backlighting. Unfortunately, I still suffer from RSI issues, and typing on a notebook definitely made me more aware of my carpals, but there’s not much I can do about that. As a final bonus, there’s no flex to speak of, even when really mashing against a key, which is more than I can say for most notebooks. The only blemish is the half-size zero key on the keypad, which is irritating if you use the 10-key a lot but not a bit enough issue for most people. ...
- Powerful processor
- Can handle all games at native definition
- Powerful graphics card
- Sober looking
- Good headphones out
- Glossy panel lacking in contrast with false colours
- Finish needs a little work
- Interference on mic-in
The G74SX is part of the Asus Republic of Gamers (or RoG for the initiated) series. It's a gamer-oriented laptop, with impressive performance in a 17.3-inch design but remains reasonably priced all the same...
Like the G53SX, the Asus G74SX is a powerful machine and perfectly adapted to gaming use. Like the G53SX however, it lacks a Full HD panel and Blu-ray player and therefore only receives a four star rating.
The Asus line of G73 Stealth notebooks proved to be all-around solid desktop replacements, equally ideal for gaming, multimedia, and productivity. In fact, the Asus G53 and G73 line, from Asus' Repulic of Gamers (ROG) family, has been very successful in the market, praised by press and end users alike. ...
On Asus’ Web site, the company claims that this notebook can hit P2008 in 3DMark11 and P9180 in 3DMark Vantage--but we hit P2222 and P10012, respectively. It’s not often that lab-tested scores actually surpass what’s advertised. In terms of performance, we were a little surprised at how inconsistent the G74SX-A1 scored; ...
- hohe Anwendungsleistung
- hohe Spieletauglichkeit
- sehr helles mattes Display
- gute Verarbeitung
- leiser Lüfter
- geringe Abwärme
- Drosselung der CPU unter Volllast
- nachgebende Tastaturplatte
- durchschnittliche Ausstattung
ASUS' newest powerhouse, the 17-inch G74SX-A2, looks like the kind of rig that gamers' dreams are made of. It's equipped with a powerful quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, a discrete Nvidia GeForce graphics chip with 3GB of RAM, and two hard drives, one of which is an SSD. Still, when a laptop is priced north of $2,000, most gamers want to make sure they are getting a quality machine that can handle today's--and tomorrow's--most intensive games. So does the G74SX offer the best bang for your gaming buck?
With a full HD display, SSD, and a Blu-ray player, the ASUS G74SX-A2 is a gaming rig that can hold its own against the category's best.
