It's styled with the rugged charm of a classic rangefinder. For a 3.75x zoom compact, the LX5 has a reassuring heft and a loads of dials, switches and buttons scattered around its various edges.

The much anticipated Panasonic Lumix LX5 is expensive, but it is without a doubt one of the best compact cameras on the market, offering superb build quality, classic design and easy handling, with fast performance and outstanding photographic versatility. The longer zoom range is a welcome improvement, however in terms of image quality there's just no real advantage over the older LX3.

Ever since it was launched two years ago, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 has won the hearts of many photographers. With its comparatively large 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor and ultra-wide 24mm F2.0 lens, this compact dominated the advanced point-and-shoot market. Competitors such as Canon and Samsung have dished out rival models such as the PowerShot S90 and EX1, respectively, but have somewhat been unable to topple the Lumix from its throne.
The LX5 may seem to have just incremental upgrades over its LX3 predecessor, but the improvements are in actual fact pretty significant.

The LX5 has a reassuringly solid, metal body. From the front and the top, it resembles the Lumix DMC-GF1, yet, from the back, it's more like a £200 point-and-shoot camera, with dinky buttons. Like the GF1, it includes an integrated pop-up flash, and a hotshoe for an external flash or viewfinder. But it's a more manageable size, measuring 110 by 66 by 43mm.
