As the newest member of Canon's G Series cameras, the Canon G15 does not disappoint. It is an all around excellent point and shoot for anyone ranging from amateurs to seasoned professionals. ...
Is it perfect? Not quite. It’s much smaller than its predecessor the G12, and that’s led to the odd compromise: there’s no longer a dedicated ISO dial or tiltable screen, for starters. But then again, this is supposed to be a compact camera, so we won’t complain too loudly. If you need a compact to back up your DSLR and demand the likes of a viewfinder and filters, then this Canon should be the one for you.

As with previous G series PowerShots, whilst quality is not an exact match, the G15 will appeal most greatly to existing DSLR owners looking for a smaller backup for those shoot-from-the-hip photo opportunities.
- Built-to-last aluminium construction
- solid feature set
- optical viewfinder
- 5x optical zoom usable during capture of video and stills
- ...
- LCD screen is fixed
- bulkier overall than all but Nikon’s P7700
- pricey given that a DSLR could be bought for even its lower street price around £440

- Lichtstarkes Objektiv
- geringes Rauschen
- RAW
- manuelle Einstellungen
- Kleiner Sucher
- hoher Preis
- Bright f/1.8-f/2.8 5x zoom
- Quality stills and videos
- Excellent image stabilization system
- Better alternatives available
- Pokes along in RAW
- Very noisy at high ISOs
Although the PowerShot G15 is a good camera, reluctantly we’re getting off the small-chip G-series merry-go-round – especially at its list price of $499. We’ve endorsed them for many years but times have changed. Although this is a solid, nicely-featured point-and-shoot, there are now many and much better Compact System Cameras with larger imaging sensors available that are also much more responsive (3-plus fps). ...
- Fast f/1.8-2.8 lens
- Full 1080p HD video recording
- 10 fps continuous shooting at full resolution
- Much improved screen resolution
- 1 cm minimum focusing istance
- Excellent image quality
- Images are usable throughout the ISO range
- Plenty of creativity modes
- Some may have preferred the articulating screen that the G12 had
- Using the optical viewfinder may be a little uncomfortable for some
- Price puts it up there with mirrorless cameras and entry-level DSLRs
The G12 has been sitting at the top of our best serious compact cameras article for some time now and we were expecting great things from the G15 and we certainly aren't disappointed. ...
- "In addition to a great, fast lens, the Canon PowerShot G15 has a nice, streamlined shooting design and produces very nice photos."
- "It's humbled by a somewhat limited feature set and ho-hum performance."
The Canon PowerShot G15 continues the G-series tradition of solid advanced compacts, but doesn't rank as best in class by any particular measure.
- Redesigned top plate
- Colour reproduction
- Professional features
- Movie performance
- Expensive in its field
- Some wind noise on movies
- Fixed scre
The G15 will do nothing to dent the PowerShot G-series' excellent reputation. It does feel a little expensive when stood against its closest competitors though -- including its sibling, the G1 X, which with the benefit of time has seen its price fall. Nonetheless, performance is good and the wide maximum aperture at both ends of the zoom is seriously tempting.
Canon has made some welcome changes here over the previous G12. With a fast AF system and speedy Raw write times the camera lends itself well to street photography, and while image quality is good it's not quite as good as expected. Ultimately, while capable in itself, competition from the cheaper Nikon P7700 and Panasonic LX7 means that, right now, it's simply not the best option in its class.
- Build quality (quality materials, assembly, robust feel, etc.)
- Noise handled well up to 1600 ISO
- Good handling, plenty of controls and easily accessible settings
- Full HD video with a sharp picture and decent stereo sound
- Some design features lost: no swivel screen, fewer controls
- Lens isn't on par with competitors
- Poor-quality optical viewfinder: small, inaccurate, uncomfortable
- Video: 24 fps framerate isn't amazingly smooth
Like the G7, Canon's PowerShot G15 is camera that's perfectly fine on the technical front but which ditches some of the features formerly seen in this range, stripping the camera of any real bonus compared with competitor models. The G15 is clearly no match for Sony's RX100, but the real problem is that it's not even the best of the rest. It's outdone by the Panasonic LX7 and the Nikon P7700, in particular.
- "Fast, sharp lens. Optical viewfinder. Good high ISO performance. Responsive. Excellent control layout. Raw shooting support."
- "Pricey. Fixed rear LCD. Limited zoom range. Bulky. No GPS or Wi-Fi. 1080p video limited to 24fps. "
The enthusiast-focused Canon PowerShot G15 delivers excellent image quality, but lacks some features found in other top-end cameras.
- Hohe Bildqualität
- Geringes Rauschen
- Lichtstarkes Objektiv
- RAW-Untersützung
- Viele manuelle Einstellungen
- Recht kleiner Sucher
