If you can deal with its slightly larger-than-average body, you'll find that the PowerShot G12 is a terrific camera in its class. Its only potential drawbacks are a relatively narrow maximum aperture of F2.8 and a somewhat slow burst mode speed of 2 shots per second with autofocus turned off and 0.7 shots per second with autofocus turned on. The G12's combination of manual controls, fun features, useful and well-constructed hardware, and excellent performance are extraordinary.
The G12, which updates the acclaimed G11, is an option for those who want better pictures and better features than a less well specified compact will deliver, but don't actually want to go the whole hog and plump for a DSLR. Or alternatively it can serve as a backup camera for those enthusiasts that either want a spare or backup to their SLR. It's worth noting that Canon doesn't currently offer a smaller interchangeable lens compact system camera or 'hybrid' to directly rival the Olympus Pens, Panasonic GF series, Sony NEX or Samsung NX, so, for Canon users, the G12 is currently as good as it gets for those wanting high performance from a relatively small package.
The Canon PowerShot G12 is a camera that provides the build quality and manual controls of a mid-range DSLR yet remains just about pocketable. It doesn't offer the fast lenses and more compact bodies of some rival high-end compacts but counters this with even great manual controls, the option to add lens accessories like filters and a greater zoom range. For our money, we would take the faster alternatives though. What's more we wonder, like its arch rival Nikon, how long Canon will be content to go without fielding an interchangeable lens compact system camera, and missing out on gaining its own share of a rapidly expanding market. These cameras offer true DSLR quality in more compact bodies and will be a tempting alternative to having both an SLR and High-end compact.

Canon's PowerShot G series has been a favourite for the photographer looking for the advance control of a DSLR in a smaller and more portable body. The range has gone through several generations and stages of evolution, with the Canon PowerShot G12 being the latest in that cycle. The model adds on the previous model, the G11, but introducing a range more shooting modes and an all-new HD movie mode.
Considering the leap that was made between the G10 and the G11, both with regards to specification and design tweaks, it would be easy to be disappointed with a perceived lack of evolution between the G11 and the G12. However, the Canon Powershot G11 was a fantastic camera and the Canon G12 has simply added to it in certain areas, and as such it hasn’t become a bad camera overnight. Expect to see some big changes with the next G series model, however.
